Description

This course leads to the results of recent research into temporal
quantification. Formal semantics has a long tradition of dealing with
temporal modifiers and with numerous kinds of quantifiers, but
quantificational temporal modifiers (during each meeting, after most
parties) have received little attention until recently. The course will
introduce the basics of temporal semantics and of quantification, and
proceed to integrate the two by developing a semantics for
quantificational temporal modifiers. Prior familiarity with temporal
semantics or with generalized quantifier theory is not assumed.

The first three classes cover introductory topics:

Class 1 - representation of time in a model; propositional tense logic;
the `now' operator; temporal predicate logic.

Class 2 - the analysis of natural language tenses as operators and as
predicates; instants and intervals; temporal prepositions.

Class 3 - an introduction to generalized quantifier theory.

Building on this background, the final two classes develop a treatment
of temporal prepositions, adverbs and clauses as temporal generalized
quantifiers (Pratt and Francez 2001, Lingustics and Philosophy
24:187-222). This part also explores interactions among temporal and
nominal quantifiers within and across clause boundaries (Artstein 2004
manuscript, available from my web site).

Class 4 - quantificational temporal modifiers.

Class 5 - temporal clauses, in particular ones with quantificational
arguments.
