Description

The goal of the course is to give an introduction to Multi-modal
Combinatory Categorial Grammar (MMCCG).

MMCCG is a new categorial grammar framework set in the combinatory
tradition (CCG). Like CCG it is mildly context sensitive and has
polynomial parseability. It improves on CCG by adopting a new form of
resource management inspired by Type-Logical Grammar (TLG). This results
in a grammar framework that not only combines the linguistic appeal of
CCG and the formal perspicuity of TLG, but that also grounds combinators
as universals in a cross-linguistic explanatory theory of natural
language grammar.

The course plan is as follows. We start with introducing categorial
grammar as such, and then proceed with examining various of the
"key"
phenomena categorial grammar is well-known for. Each phenomenon will be
treated at *introductory* level: the discussions are meant to provide an
entry into the literature, not as a detailed overview of all that has
been done.

   1. Introduction to the categorial perspective on grammar
   2. Modeling meaning using hybrid logic
   3. Coordination
   4. Extraction and long-distance dependencies
   5. Information structure and its realization

The lectures will be accompanied by exercises, which can be done using
OpenCCG, the parsing/generation workbench for MMCCG. The exercises focus
in part on the material dealt with in the lectures, in part on extending
the discussed approaches to more complex examples.

The course is based on recent material by Baldridge, Kruijff, Steedman,
and White.
