Description The proposed course is essentially a re-run of Crouch's ESSLLI-2000
course on linear logic for linguists, combined with elements of Paiva's
ESSLLI-96 course on models of linear logic.
This *really* is a foundational course that introduces proof theory from
scratch (sequent calculus, natural deduction, tableau); relates proof
structures to linguistic structures (such as parse trees); explains the
proof theoretic motivations for the development of linear logic and its
adjustment of structural rules; discusses intuitionistic proof nets and
how they can correspond to lambda-terms in semantic representations;
introduces some of the models for linear logic.
Prerequisites: some familiarity with first order logic and the lambda
calculus (e.g. chapters 1 and 2 of Blackburn and Bos, vol 1), would
help, but is probably not essential.
