Description

In this course, advanced students of natural language semantics are
exposed to a new approach towards verbal semantics. The approach is
a cognitive linguistics one, allowing one to model semantic structures in
a promising way. Moreover, it is formal and open to computational issues
in virtue of being based on the Unified Modeling Language (UML), the
lingua franca for object-oriented systems in computer science.

After discussing and comparing some decompositional approaches to verbal
semantics, we develop requirements for semantic representations. These
argue for an object-oriented approach to verbal semantics. We briefly
present the successful object-oriented modeling language UML and then
adapt it to verbal semantics. The adaption, which led to the development
of the new representational framework Unified Eventity Representation
(UER), is motivated from a cognitive point of view. We deal with event
structures, semantic roles, ontological categories, and selectional
restrictions, amongst others. Important issues for discussion are also the
graphical representation chosen in this approach towards verbal meaning,
and some applications of the UER in natural language semantics.

The program of the course is as follows:

Session 1: Decompositional approaches to verbal semantics
Session 2: Requirements for adequate semantic representations
Session 3: Overview of the Unified Modeling Language (UML)
Session 4: The Unified Eventity Representation (UER)
Session 5: Application of the UER and discussion

Participants are expected to have some knowledge of lexical semantics;
understanding of object-oriented concepts is an advantage, but not a
must.

The course draws on the following book:

Representational Framework Based on UML. (Trends in Linguistics.
